About the course

This course aims to provide participants with essential knowledge and skills to educate children about disasters, support them emotionally, and implement disaster awareness activities effectively.

Course Content

This course equips educators, psychologists, and support staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to teach disaster awareness effectively and provide emotional support to children. Through practical activities, discussions, and digital tools, participants will be better prepared to handle disaster education in their institutions.

Morning Session (3 hours):

  • Understanding disasters: Definitions, types, and key concepts.
  • Disaster education in the world and Europe: Global best practices.
  • Activity: Natural Disaster News Bulletin (Recognizing and analyzing natural disasters).

Afternoon Session (3 hours):

  • Psychological effects of disasters on children.
  • How to explain disasters to children in an age-appropriate manner.

    • Group discussion: Challenges and solutions in disaster communication.

Morning Session (3 hours):

  • Introduction to geological, meteorological, and hydrological disasters.
  • Special considerations for children with special education needs.
  • Activity: What is happening to the clouds? (Understanding different natural disasters).

Afternoon Session (3 hours):

  • How disasters affect children emotionally and socially.
  • Activity: Disaster Hats (Understanding disaster causes through interactive learning).

    • Workshop: Designing an engaging disaster education session for children.

Morning Session (3 hours):

  • Effective communication steps with children after disasters.
  • Helping children express their fears and emotions.
  • Role-playing activity: Explaining the event in a calm and reassuring manner.

Afternoon Session (3 hours):

  • Building trust and providing comfort after a disaster.
  • Case study analysis: How different age groups respond to trauma.

    • Group workshop: Developing a child-centered support plan.

Morning Session (3 hours):

  • Understanding the post-disaster recovery process.
  • Expressing emotions and active listening techniques.
  • Activity: Band-Aid Exercise (Helping children recognize their strengths and resilience).

  • Creating healthy thought patterns and coping mechanisms.
  • Post-disaster reinforcing activities: Games, storytelling, and role-playing.
