KiVa Antibullying Programme

About the course

This 6-day training programme is designed to equip educators with evidence-based strategies to prevent peer bullying in school settings. The course brings together key elements of Finnish anti-bullying approaches, peer mediation practices, and positive education to support the creation of safe and inclusive school climates. Through a combination of theory and hands-on workshops, participants develop practical skills and design action plans that can be directly implemented in their own schools.

What will you learn?

By the end of this course, participants will:

Analyse the causes and impacts of peer bullying in school environments and understand evidence-based prevention approaches.

Apply KiVa-based classroom practices, peer mediation, and positive education strategies to promote a safe school climate.

Develop sustainable, school-specific anti-bullying action plans that strengthen student belonging and accountability.

Course Content

This course equips educators with practical tools and evidence-based strategies to prevent peer bullying and promote safe, inclusive school environments. Participants gain hands-on experience with KiVa-based practices, peer mediation techniques, and positive education approaches. Through interactive sessions and collaborative activities, teachers develop skills to strengthen student belonging, improve school climate, and implement sustainable anti-bullying action plans in their own institutions.

Morning (3 hours):

  • Course introduction, participant school presentations, and ice-breaking activities
  • Overview of Finland’s holistic approach to bullying prevention and educational philosophy

Afternoon (3 hours):

  • National anti-bullying policies and frameworks

    • Reflection and group discussion

Morning (3 hours):

  • Introduction to KiVa as an evidence-based anti-bullying model
  • Core principles and theoretical framework of KiVa

Afternoon (3 hours):

  • Workshop: Implementing KiVa classroom activities and lessons

    • Reflection and experience sharing

Morning (3 hours):

  • Peer mediation systems: empowering students to resolve conflicts.
  • “Steps of Responsibility” model: understanding the impact of behaviour.

Afternoon (3 hours):

  • Practical workshop: active listening, empathy, and dialogue through role-play

    • Group evaluation

Morning (3 hours):

  • Introduction to the “See the Good!” approach and positive school climate
  • Case examples from schools applying strength-based practices

Afternoon (3 hours):

  • Workshop: Designing learning environments that promote belonging and positivity

    • Daily reflection session

Morning (3 hours):

  • Review of anti-bullying strategies and key learning outcomes
  • Future planning: developing a customised anti-bullying action plan for participants’ schools

Afternoon (3 hours):

  • Feedback and collaborative discussion
  • Course evaluation and summary of acquired competencies

  • Awarding of Certificates of Attendance

  • Cultural visits and outdoor social activities
